Har Har Mahadeva!

Today on the glorious occasion of Maha Shivratri, the birth of Lord Shiva! Let’s celebrate him!

Shiva is the principal deities of Hinduism. He is the supreme God within Shaivism, one of the three most influential denominations in contemporary Hinduism.

Shiva is “the transformer” within the Trimurti, the Hindu trinity that includes Brahma and Vishnu. Shiva is the supreme who creates, preserves and transforms the universe. Various forms of Shiva are worshipped by people in India and across the world. Some of which are Ascetic and Householder, Nataraja – The Lord of Dance and Lingam.

Why is Maha Shivratri celebrated?

Maha Shivratri marks the remembrance of overcoming darkness and ignorance. It is observed narrating Shiva-related poems, chanting prayers and remembering Shiva. Some observe fast and meditate. The ardent devotees stay awake all night. People who visit temples offer milk, fruits, flowers, fresh leaves and sweets to the lingam. Some communities organise special dance events, to mark Shiva as the lord of the dance, with individual and group performances.

Reasons behind why he adorns various things on his body!

Snake: as snakes are a symbol of awareness. You will always be alert when a snake is around your neck.

Ashes: ashes remind you of the impermanence of life, that indicates that you should live your life to the fullest.

Moon: the moon and mind are connected. To be happy in all phases of life you must have a say over your mind.

Damru: is in the shape of infinity, therefore, Shiva is the unbound infinite consciousness.

Trishul: Shiva rules over three gunas represented on the Trishul. Yet he encourages everyone to do their dharma that is, to act and stand up for the truth.

Blue Bodied: the sky is limitless and so is Shiva.

Ganga: represents Gyan (knowledge). Wisdom dawns naturally when you are established in the Shiva.

Let’s join hands and worship the God who preserves us.

Har Har Mahadeva!
